Preventing Water Heater Problems

Imagine this scenario: You are running late for work and need to take a quick shower. But when you turn on the shower, you get a cold dousing instead of a warm spray. As it turns out, your water heater is on the fritz. Even worse, it's the middle of winter and you're taking a cold shower in freezing weather.

What could have caused your water heater to break down? Could the problem have been avoided? What could you do in the future to prevent an unwanted repeat of the experience?

Possible Causes of Water Heater Problems & How to Prevent Them

Preventing water heater problems

When your water heater is not working properly, there are a few possible reasons. Most of these are preventable if you are careful and attentive enough. Here are a couple of the more common causes of water heater problems and how you can prevent them:

  • Not enough hot water – If the problem is little or no hot water coming from your spigot, there are a number of possible causes. It can either be reduced water flow due to sediment build-up or the dip tube in your tank is damaged. Another possible reason is your family uses more hot water than your heater can provide.
  • To prevent this problem, you have to eliminate all of the possible causes.
  • If you live in an area known for its hard water, sediment buildup can cause a clog that restricts water flow. In that situation, regular descaling should be considered. For a damaged dip tube, periodically checking for signs of damage and replacing it when cracks appear is what you need to do. If your family uses more hot water than you initially anticipated, replacing your water tank or heater with a bigger one might be in order.
  • My water heater is leaking – The tank of your water heater can spring a leak, which in turn can reduce the amount of hot water that is available to you. This problem can also bring about water damage to the area around your tank. The leak can be caused by a number of issues as well. Included in the causes are tank corrosion, a faulty temperature pressure release valve, and improper installation.
  • To prevent this problem from happening, routine maintenance checks need to be made to ensure that your water heater and tank are not in need of any repair. When it comes to proper installation, you need to find a trusted water heater installer in your area to ensure that this does not happen.

Teasdale Fenton responded to a flooded lower level due to a failed sump pump within 90 minutes of being called on a Friday night. Corey and Zack efficiently cleared what needed to be moved out of the way and then removed the water. They set up fans and a large dehumidifier. The next day a team came out to check on everything and measured for dampness.

We had a pipe burst in our attic over a weekend and called Teasdale- Fenton. They sent someone out same-day to quote us on cleanup from the water leak and sent a team out the following day to remove wet insulation and leave Fans to dry everything out. Before removing the fans they moisture tested the whole area. Very pleased with their prompt and professional service.
